Bishops approve conflict-of-interest, social responsibility policies
Published: 2003-11-12
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The U.S. bishops have adopted a policy to prevent conflict of interest in conducting business and approved an updated version of their guidelines on socially responsible investing. Archbishop James P. Keleher of Kansas City, Kan., chairman of the bishops' Committee on Budget and Finance, which drafted both documents, said U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' auditors suggested adoption of a conflict-of-interest policy such as is common in other institutions. Guidelines on socially responsible investing needed updating to reflect new concerns that have arisen since they were adopted in 1991, he said. Both documents were approved by voice vote Nov. 12 during the bishops' fall meeting.
