Bishops unanimously back document on agriculture, food, farmworkers
Published: 2003-11-12
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The U.S. bishops Nov. 12 unanimously approved "For I Was Hungry and You Gave Me Food: Catholic Reflections on Food, Farmers and Farmworkers," its first new document on agriculture in 14 years. The 237-0 vote came during their fall general meeting in Washington. "For I Was Hungry" examines agricultural issues from genetically modified crops to crop subsidies and market forces affecting rural life both in the United States and in the nation's trading partners. Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore of Dodge City, Kan., chairman of the bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Agriculture Issues, said the statement would be accessible to both rural and city Catholics. "You did not ask us to produce a Washington, D.C., phone-book document," he said. "You asked us for a document that would continue the conversation" on agriculture, and one that would "engage our people." He added, "Is it the last word in farm statements? It surely is not. Is it perfect? It surely is not." Bishops commenting on "For I Was Hungry" seemed to like it just fine.
