Bishops prepare to vote on document on devotions
Published: 2003-11-10
WASHINGTON (CNS) - Bishop Donald W. Trautman of Erie, Pa., presented the U.S. bishops with a proposed document on popular devotions Nov. 10 during the opening session of the fall meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Bishop Trautman, chairman of the bishops' Committee on Doctrine, called the document a pastoral statement that is intended to take a "supportive and encouraging approach" to popular devotions. He also noted that the document "does not recommend any particular devotion" but rather seeks to explain the role of such devotions in the lives of Catholics. Drafted by Bishop Trautman's committee in consultation with the committees on Liturgy, Catechesis, and Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, the 21-page statement strongly affirms the role of popular devotions and pious practices in Catholic life.
