New book heralds CCHD-funded projects as 'credible signs' of Christ

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- "Catholic social teaching should not be the church's best-kept secret. It's the jewel in the crown of the Catholic Church. It's something that should be heralded." That belief -- along with a longtime interest in Catholic social services and a background in academia -- led John P. Hogan to write "Credible Signs of Christ Alive," a hands-on look at six community self-help projects funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. For the book, Hogan spent a week immersed in each of the projects, resulting in what he called a "bottom-up approach to Catholic social teaching." Hogan said the best part of writing the book was spending time with project participants from Camden, N.J., to Davis County, Iowa, to East Los Angeles.
