California parishes in fire-stricken areas step up to help neighbors
Published: 2003-10-31
SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Smoke was still thick in the air, ash was still falling, and some of the local wildfires were still burning out of control as parishes, pastors and lay Catholics began stepping in to help victims. San Diegans who lost homes, others who were evacuated, and those who were without power found refuge in churches -- primarily St. Peter's in Fallbrook and St. Louise de Marillac in Crest. Many were fed and supported by Catholic Charities. St. Louise de Marillac is a tiny parish, with only 40 registered families, but with the fire devastating the community the parish became a center for consolation and service. Led by Father Robert Irwin, the parish served hundreds of hot meals and distributed bottles of water, clothing, canned goods and other supplies, provided by Catholic Charities, local businesses and other members of the community.
