Camden, N.J., diocesan official named to USCCB catechesis post

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Michael Steier, secretary for evangelization and catechetical formation in the Diocese of Camden, N.J., has been named assistant secretary for catechesis and leadership formation in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Department of Education. He succeeds Sister Maureen Shaughnessy, a Sister of Charity. She left the position to become general superior of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J. Steier has worked in religious education since 1975, when he began at the parish level. He became director of the Camden Diocese's Office of Religious Education in 1995 and has held his current position since 2000. He holds a doctor of ministry degree from St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore and master's degrees in theology and divinity from St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Mich. He also pursued graduate theological studies at the Angelicum, a pontifical university in Rome.
