MADRID, Spain (CNS) -- Sending a Vatican official to the international donors' conference in Madrid, the Vatican signaled its moral and financial support for rebuilding Iraq and fostering democracy in the nation. Archbishop Paul Cordes, president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum," the Vatican office that promotes charitable giving and distributes aid from Pope John Paul II, attended the Oct. 23-24 conference in Madrid. He was among some 70 representatives of nations and organizations involved in the conference to raise money for the reconstruction of Iraq and to establish procedures for oversight of the donated funds.
