
Canon Law Society of America's annual convention in Oregon draws 400

PORTLAND, Ore. (CNS) -- More than 400 canon lawyers gathered Oct. 13-16 in Portland for the 65th annual convention of the Canon Law Society of America. The keynote address was delivered Oct. 13 by Cardinal Avery Dulles, the Laurence McGinley professor of religion and society at Fordham University. He spoke on "The Universal and the Particular Church: Theological and Historical Foundations." Other major addresses included a talk Oct. 15 by Mercy Sister Sharon Euart, a canonical consultant and a former associate general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who spoke on "Complementary Legislation of Episcopal Conferences: Reflections on the U.S. Experience." Father Gregory Bittner, judicial vicar for the Diocese of Birmingham, Ala., spoke Oct. 16 on "Tensions in Achieving and Observing Subsidiarity."
