ORLANDO, Fla. (CNS) -- Following a six-month search for new leadership for the central office of The Florida Catholic, the executive board has hired Christopher Gunty as associate publisher -- a new position. Gunty, managing editor and associate publisher of The Catholic Sun, newspaper of the Phoenix Diocese, will take over direction of The Florida Catholic Dec. 1. Gunty, who also served as managing editor of The Catholic New World (formerly The Chicago Catholic), brings wide experience to the job. A former seminarian, he attended Niles College of Loyola (now called St. Joseph Seminary College of Loyola) and Loyola University of Chicago, earning a bachelor's degree in English with minors in theology and philosophy. His newspaper career includes ad sales, circulation, managing business concerns, writing, editing and photography. In 2000, he was given the Catholic Press Association's highest honor, the St. Francis de Sales Award, for "outstanding contributions to Catholic journalism." He served as CPA president in 1996-98.
