Vatican backs U.N. effort to promote education's role in development
Published: 2003-10-21
UNITED NATIONS (CNS) -- A Vatican statement Oct. 20 endorsed the U.N. Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, set to begin Jan. 1, 2005. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the Vatican nuncio to the United Nations, said the emphasis of the decade would help to achieve millennium development goals set by world leaders at the U.N. Millennium Summit in September 2000. In response to concern about damage to the environment and depletion of natural resources, the United Nations has called for patterns of development that can be sustainable over the long term. Observing a decade promoting the role of education in development was recommended by the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa, last year, and voted on by the U.N. General Assembly later in the year.
