
Archbishop Cronin of Hartford resigns; Bishop Mansell to succeed him

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin of Hartford, Conn., and named Bishop Henry J. Mansell of Buffalo, N.Y., to succeed him. Archbishop Cronin, who turns 76 on Nov. 14, has been a bishop since 1968 and was named head of the Hartford Archdiocese in 1991. Archbishop Mansell, 66, was ordained a bishop in 1992 and has headed the Buffalo Diocese since 1995. He will be installed at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford Dec. 18. Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced the changes Oct. 20 in Washington. Archbishop Cronin, joined by Hartford Auxiliary Bishops Peter A. Rosazza and Christie A. Macaluso, welcomed the new archbishop at a press conference Oct. 20 in Hartford. Archbishop Mansell said he was eager to begin visiting the parishes, schools and other institutions of the archdiocese and start meeting its 700,000 Catholics.
