Published: 2003-10-17
HOUMA, La. (CNS) -- To love as Jesus loved is the command that Bishop Sam G. Jacobs, the new bishop of Houma-Thibodaux, conveyed to his people at an evening prayer service Oct. 9 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux and his installation the following day at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Houma. Despite inclement weather, both churches were filled to capacity. Bishop Jacobs, bishop of Alexandria, La., since 1989, was named third bishop of the 26-year-old Houma-Thibodaux Diocese Aug. 1. He succeeds Bishop Michael Jarrell, who last November was appointed bishop of Lafayette, La. During the evening service in Thibodaux, Bishop Jacobs made a profession of faith and oath of fidelity and signed documents accepting his role as bishop of Houma-Thibodaux.
