
Retired archbishop of Kansas City, Kan., dies at age 85

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (CNS) -- Retired Archbishop Ignatius J. Strecker of Kansas City died Oct. 16 from complications caused by a broken hip. The 85-year-old archbishop led the Kansas City Archdiocese from 1969 to 1993. His priestly ministry spanned 60 years and for 41 of those years he was a bishop and archbishop. His funeral Mass was to be celebrated Oct. 21 at the Cathedral of St. Peter followed by his burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Kansas City. The archbishop, one of seven children, was born on Nov. 23, 1917, on a farm near the town of Spearville, northeast of Dodge City.
