Target families when fighting drugs, Vatican nuncio tells U.N.
Published: 2003-10-15
UNITED NATIONS (CNS) -- International efforts to reduce demand for illicit drugs "should target family relationships," the Vatican nuncio to the United Nations said Oct. 14. Archbishop Celestino Migliore said research had demonstrated "a link between strong family bonds and the prevention of drug abuse by children." Noting that next year will be the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, he called for the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, as well as governmental and other agencies, to prepare for the observance by exploring measures "that could strengthen the central role of the family in drug prevention." The nuncio, speaking at U.N. headquarters in New York, made his remarks in a statement to a committee of the General Assembly dealing with the issue of international drug control.
