Spanish cardinal-designate known for confronting almost any topic

SEVILLE, Spain (CNS) -- Seville's archbishop, Cardinal-designate Carlos Amigo Vallejo, is a prolific author known for his willingness to confront almost any topic. "One cannot love that which one does not know," he said in 1999 as he published "One Hundred Responses for Keeping the Faith." In the book, and in a 2003 edition, the cardinal-designate responded to questions on topics as diverse as God's existence, the importance of chastity and the salary of pastors and bishops. Pope John Paul II named the 69-year-old Spaniard to the College of Cardinals Sept. 28; he was to receive his red hat during an Oct. 21 ceremony at the Vatican. The cardinal-designate, a Franciscan, has written at least 35 books; one of his earliest works and his most recent deal with Catholic-Muslim dialogue.
