Speakers at Notre Dame conference advocate renewal of culture

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (CNS) -- Those who see Pope John Paul II as a taskmaster who is restraining those who try to break free of authority have an adolescent approach to the pope, Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago said at the University of Notre Dame. Such an approach dismisses the pope's true role as the "bearer of a vision that could give us insights into the ways of God," the cardinal said at an Oct. 2-4 conference on the renewal and formation of the culture. "The topic of renewal of culture falls easily along with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of a pontificate which has made the dialogue between faith and culture part of the theological conversation as well as general conversation," Cardinal George said in his Oct. 2 keynote talk. In its constant search for ways of understanding God's way with his creatures, the church has a wonderful resource in Pope John Paul's images of God and his witness as theologian to the church's apostolic faith, the cardinal said.
