Bethlehem University celebrations offer students chance to relax

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (CNS) -- For the students of Bethlehem University, the school's recent 30th anniversary celebrations were an opportunity to let off a little steam after three years of tension and violence resulting from the intifada. "It's nice for a change," said Leena Qumsiyeh, 20, an English major at the university, as she and her cousin left a crowded volleyball match on campus Oct. 9. "We have such a miserable life here, it is nice to be happy for one day." Sports activities were among the activities sponsored during the Oct. 2-11 celebration, which included movie screenings and music. Students and university officials planted a tree to commemorate the anniversary. The university was founded in 1973 at the request of Pope Paul VI to provide an educational institution that would excel in the arts, culture and professional development. In addition, the university was to promote interreligious dialogue and collaboration. Since its founding, the Vatican-sponsored university has been operated by the Christian Brothers, with 12 brothers currently on staff.
