
Bishop Banks retires in Green Bay; Pittsburgh auxiliary is successor

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Green Bay Bishop Robert J. Banks and named Auxiliary Bishop David A. Zubik of Pittsburgh as his successor. The appointment was announced Oct. 10 in Washington by Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, papal nuncio to the United States. In February, Bishop Banks turned 75, the normal retirement age for bishops. Bishop Zubik, 54, is a Pennsylvania native who has been an auxiliary bishop in Pittsburgh since 1997. He was ordained in 1975 after attending St. Paul Seminary in Pittsburgh and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. Bishop Banks, who was ordained in 1952, studied at Gregorian University and the Lateran University in Rome. In 1985, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Boston, and five years later he was named bishop of Green Bay.
