Cardinal-designate Erdo implemented changes in Hungarian archdiocese

WARSAW, Poland (CNS) -- Cardinal-designate Peter Erdo of Esztergom-Budapest already has made changes since taking over Hungary's main archdiocese early this year. Father Laszlo Lukacs, editor of the Catholic Vigilia monthly, said Cardinal-designate Erdo has revived a tradition of "parish missions," which lapsed under communist rule. "Everyone appreciates the energy and imagination he's shown in being ready to consult people this way," he said. "He's also the first Hungarian bishop since 1989 to enjoy a real familiarity with Rome. This will give him a great advantage," he added. "With his theologically conservative views, Rome can be sure he'll loyally follow the Vatican's line. But his open negotiating style also offers better prospects for the church here," Father Lukacs told Catholic News Service. The 51-year-old was named Sept. 28 to the College of Cardinals and will be elevated in the Oct. 21 consistory at the Vatican.
