PARIS (CNS) -- Cardinal-designate Bernard Panafieu of Marseille, France, said interreligious dialogue is "part of his daily life" and something he plans to continue as cardinal. "Dialogue is crucial for us to know one another," Cardinal-designate Panafieu said. The 72-year-old member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue was named Sept. 28 to the College of Cardinals and will be elevated in the Oct. 21 consistory at the Vatican. The son of a bank executive, he was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Chatellerault, a small city in central France, and ordained a priest in 1956. He was named auxiliary bishop of the Annecy Diocese in 1974 and archbishop of Aix in 1978. In 1994, he was named coadjutor archbishop of the Marseille Archdiocese and was installed as archbishop the following year.
