LATROBE, Pa. (CNS) -- St. Vincent College in Latrobe has established the Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media to promote early learning, caring relationships between children and adults and responsible uses of media. Rogers, who spent more than three decades as host of public television's "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," was a native of Latrobe, which he described as his "very first neighborhood." He died of cancer Feb. 27 at age 74 after working in children's television for nearly 50 years. "Fred Rogers was always a good neighbor to St. Vincent," said James Will, St. Vincent president, in announcing the center, which Rogers began helping plan three years ago. The center will work with the college's planned School of Communication, Education and Social Sciences in establishing degree, certificate, and continuing education programs.
