MARYKNOLL, N.Y. (CNS) -- Maryknoll Father William Fryda, a physician, received the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association Humanitarian Award for his work in bringing quality health care to the poor of Nairobi, Kenya. The humanitarian award is presented to alumni from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who provide volunteer or medical service to underserved populations or in challenging situations. Awardees are nominated by their peers. Father Fryda is the medical director and co-founder of St. Mary's Mission Hospital in Nairobi. The hospital, which opened three years ago, now cares for more patients than any other hospital in the country. The priest started working on the hospital when he noticed the devastating need for quality medical facilities for the impoverished people of Nairobi and began to literally carve out a 300-bed facility in the Kenyan bush.
