NEW YORK (CNS) -- The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement gave their 10th annual Graymoor Award Oct. 3 to Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York and Koichi Takahashi, a graduate of one of the order's schools in Japan who is now president of a diamond firm and a U.S. citizen. The Graymoor Community Service Award went to Maryknoll Father Peter M. Le Jacq, a physician who formerly served in Tanzania. Now, while based in the United States, he is working to help the Tanzanian bishops establish the first Catholic medical school in East Africa. The honors were presented by Father Arthur M. Johnson, minister general, at a fund-raising dinner in New York. Proceeds of the "Sharing Hope Celebration Dinner," estimated this year at $250,000, help support various service ministries of the order. Graymoor, the motherhouse of the Atonement Friars, is located at Garrison, in the Archdiocese of New York.
