What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Faculty, staff at Rhode Island Catholic school wear uniforms, too

Published: 2003-10-03

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (CNS) -- The alarm clock rings. It's time to get up, get dressed and head off to school. You're running late. Thank goodness you don't have to worry about what clothes to wear because you wear a school uniform. That scenario takes place every school day for thousands of students enrolled in Catholic schools. But this year at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy in Central Falls, in the Providence Diocese, there's a slight twist on that scene: faculty and staff members also wear uniforms. Teacher John Gilgun said that during a faculty meeting at the academy last year someone suggested that all the teachers should wear school uniforms. He doesn't recall who first made the suggestion because the idea took off with such enthusiasm that a vote was quickly taken and it was unanimously approved. On the first day of school this year, much to the delight of the students, teachers, administrators and staff all came to school wearing their uniforms. The school secretary, teachers and even the principal, Mercy Sister Ann McKenna, all voluntarily, and proudly, wore shirts and other attire with the school logo.
