MARYKNOLL, N.Y. (CNS) -- Dec. 1 is the deadline for the 2004 Maryknoll essay contest for students in grades 6 through 12, which has as its theme, "Love your enemies?" Nearly $3,000 in scholarship money will be awarded and the winning essays will be published in Maryknoll magazine. The 2004 contest asks students to write an essay of 500-750 words on whether it is possible today for people to follow Jesus' teaching from chapter 5 of Matthew's Gospel: "Do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let that person slap your left cheek too. ... Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." First prize of $1,000 will be awarded in each of two divisions -- grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Second prize is $300 for each division, and third prize is $150 for each. Instructions and a cover sheet for entries are available on Maryknoll's essay contest Web page at: www.maryknoll.org/essay.
