Two Athens events help local causes

Published March 20, 2014

The Athens Catholic community has two upcoming opportunities to get fit and help good causes at the same time.

The 36th 5K Human Race/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 5. The proceeds from this fun event help the Franciscan Outreach Ministry at the University of Georgia Catholic Center. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Entry fees start at $15 for students and $20 on race day. You can find details online at http://bit.ly/gb-36thHumanRace. Or visit the center’s website, http://bit.ly/gb-CCUGA5Kregistration.

And St. Mary’s Health Care System in Athens has teamed with former UGA defensive lineman David Jacobs for the fourth annual Next Step 5K against stroke on Saturday, May 3, at 9 a.m. at the University of Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum. A family fun day with food, games and music for all participants follows the walk/run, which begins and ends at the coliseum.

The Next Step 5K raises awareness of the risk of stroke, which Jacobs experienced and now works to combat. Proceeds will benefit St. Mary’s stroke program.

Preregistration is $20 for adults, $15 for students. Stroke survivors are invited to participate at no charge. After April 18, registration is $25. Registration is open at Active.com. Paper registration forms are available at St. Mary’s Information Desk, St. Mary’s Wellness Center, Classic Race Services events, or by emailing NextStep5KAthens@gmail.com.
