St. Peter Claver students win writing awards

Published March 7, 2014

A new literary magazine is being started at St. Peter Claver Regional Catholic School, in Decatur, after students brought home awards for their writing.

In its first year, the St. Peter Claver Philology (Writing) Club earned seven awards from the regional Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

Two students received honorable mentions, seventh-graders Renee Otieno and Jahdirah Wilkinson. Four received Silver Keys, including Renee Otieno and seventh-grader Dylan Didier and eighth-graders Marco Dinkins and Genesis Nazario. Seventh-grader Kazin Glenn received a Gold Key. Silver and Gold Key winners will have their writing featured at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) Atlanta during an exhibition running from March 7-22.

Kazin’s award-winning poem, “The Motion of Poetry through Life,” will be entered into the national pool for consideration for the highest awards.

Using the students’ work as a springboard, the school will be publishing the award-winning writing, along with other student compositions, in a new magazine by the end of the school year.
