ATLANTA—Spring Hill College’s department of theology and ministry has announced a new format and class schedules for this year’s Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality in Atlanta. Beginning this year, courses will be offered in an intensive weekend format at Ignatius Retreat House along with additional online options. The new format has been designed to provide greater flexibility for students to be able to continue their daily routines while still having the opportunity to further their studies and personal spiritual enrichment.
Jesuit Father Christopher Viscardi, whose focus is in the areas of spirituality and church history, will offer “Prayer and Discernment” (parts I and II), and “The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius” (parts I and II). “Prayer and Discernment” part I will be offered June 15-17, followed by “Prayer and Discernment” part II online June 18-July 9. “The Spiritual Exercises” part I may be completed by way of teleconference or online. Part II will only be available online, June 18-July 9. These courses are required for those earning the certificate of spiritual direction.
John Switzer, Ph.D., a theologian with a focus on interreligious dialogue and friendship, will offer his course, “Apocalypse Wow: Christian & Secular Stories of Revelation,” June 29-July 1.
Timothy Carmody, Ph.D., a biblical scholar and author specializing in narrative criticism, will offer his course, “Foreign and Faithful: Ruth and Old Testament Sensitivity to Strangers,” July 4-6. For those taking the course for academic credit, the option of earning additional credits via an online supported independent study will also be available.
All course credits earned may be applied toward degree requirements for the master of theological studies or master of pastoral studies programs, or a bachelor’s degree. Credits may also be applied toward certificate programs.
Meal and housing plans at Ignatius House for the intensive weekend dates are also available.
