Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

Mary Ann Glendon, in a letter written about her (Letter to the Editor, The Georgia Bulletin, May 7), was accused of refusing the Laetare Medal awarded to her by the University of Notre Dame for political reasons. However, I believe that Ms. Glendon was following the guidelines set forth in 2004 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which state, “Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” President Obama has repeatedly voiced his support for abortion and has passed laws enabling the spread of abortion, both of which are a “defiance of our fundamental moral principles.” In extending to him an honorary degree and a speaking engagement, Notre Dame is in violation of the USCCB’s guidelines. Ms. Glendon was correct in refusing to accept the Laetare Medal, which would necessitate her sharing a stage with President Obama. Doing so would look as if she were lending her support to Notre Dame’s defiance.
