Catholic Schools Excel, Garner State Championships

ATLANTA—The St. Pius X High School girls soccer team recorded its 19th shutout as the team defeated North Hall High School, Gainesville, 4-0 to capture the Class AAA state championship and cap off a perfect 22-0 season on May 8. Senior forward Christine Christy scored two of the team’s four goals, one in each half, to help lead her team to victory.
Not to be outdone, the following day the St. Pius X boys soccer team defeated West Hall High School of Oakwood 3-0. Stephen McGill scored on a header with an assist from Andy Leipold three minutes into the match. That was followed by two more first-half goals from senior Zach Elstad. It was the first state title for the boys since 2001.

Individual tennis state championship for junior Eric Diaz, who won his third straight individual tennis championship. Diaz has not dropped a set in three years.
Our Lady of Mercy High School, Fairburn
Individual track and field state championship for senior Jake Lethbridge in the 800m and 1600m. The all-senior 4x400 relay team of Jared Cooper, Richie Obiora, and Matt and Jake Lethbridge also won the state title with a time of 3:25.
