Letter to the Editor: Glendon Decision Called Political
Published: May 7, 2009
To the Editor:
So Mary Ann Glendon decides to embarrass the great University of Notre Dame by turning down the Laetare Medal (The Georgia Bulletin, April 30) because the university plans to honor Barack Obama. Mary Ann Glendon, a Bush appointee and supporter, says the decision is based on moral grounds and the fundamental principles of justice. I would respect the decision if she also protested George Bush’s and the Republican position on the war in Iraq, capital punishment and insensitivity to the poor. It is apparent the decision to turn down the medal is more about politics than morality and adds nothing to the dialogue on difficult choices other than the arrogance of I’m right, you’re wrong …
