Letter to the Editor: Abortion Still Dangerous For Women

Published: May 7, 2009

To the Editor:

In a letter written to the editor on April 23, the writer claimed that a doctor stated, “You haven’t seen the young girls brought in for treatment after being butchered at one of the several backroom abortion clinics around here.” I believe that statement to be true, but I would like to point out that legalizing abortion did not end that practice. The last year before abortion was legalized for the entire country, there were 39 deaths due to abortion according to the CDC. The CDC no longer issues accurate reports for deaths relating to abortions because many states no longer report abortion-related deaths. The last report of the CDC stated that 11 women died from abortions in 1998, and that did not include numbers from the states of California, Maryland, Florida, Louisiana, Alaska, New Hampshire, Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma and the District of Columbia. As you can see, women are still dying from abortion. Legalizing it did not make it safer, it only made it less visible.
