Letter To The Editor: Weigel ‘Honest, Original Thinker/Writer’
Published: February 5, 2009
To the Editor:
I find the criticism of The Georgia Bulletin (Letters to the Editor, Jan. 22) for publishing the Jan. 15 article by George Weigel confusing and disappointing. Confusing, because as a reader of the GB for over several years now, I have found the Bulletin to be a fair and unbiased publication. Confused, because as a reader of George Weigel’s book, “The Cube and the Cathedral,” I found Mr. Weigel to be an honest and original thinker/writer on a topic that is important to any person who takes their Christian faith seriously.
Disappointing, because of the mundane reason for their disagreement: namely that no Catholic can ever support any war under any circumstances. This is a misunderstanding of Christian or Catholic theology. I suggest these critics read our Catechism, especially numbers 2307-2314 which spell out the theological framework for when a government has the right to defend itself with a “just war.” Even if the current Iraq war is not a “just war” (which none of us has any way of knowing) we, as Catholics, must not sell ourselves and our nation short.
