Letter To The Editor: Christian Faith Not Exercise In Power

Published: January 22, 2009

To the Editor:

In his column of Jan. 15, George Weigel tells a story about George W. Bush concluding, “I think his brother was even worse.” Are we to understand that Weigel means Jeb Bush was worse? Or, is Weigel suggesting that George H.W. Bush was an “even worse” president?

I was still confused, and this time upset, when I read Weigel’s claim that George W. Bush should be praised “for his steadfast support of the pro-life cause, domestically and internationally.” George W. Bush articulates opposition to abortions. Yet, he also supports the death penalty and has led our nation into expanding an international agenda of war and destruction.

Moreover, Bush’s “unapologetic confession of the Christian faith” seems to be divergent from how I understand ours as Catholic Christians. We know that our victory in the war on terror will come not from violent destruction, and exercising power over others. Rather, our security comes from the power within: from God, our redeemer and savior.

Please discontinue George Weigel’s “Commentary” until he is transformed into a follower of the God of love and justice.
