Letter to the Editor: Partisan Political Columnist
Published: January 22, 2009
To the Editor:
George Weigel is a conservative political commentator, as his recent column clearly demonstrated (The Georgia Bulletin, Jan. 15). Ostensibly thanking George W. Bush for pursuing policies important to Catholics, Weigel showed his partisan hand at every turn. He did not mention one of the many ways in which Mr. Bush failed to live up to Catholic teaching. What about the administration’s use of torture, by any decent person’s definition, in violation of basic human rights? What about Mr. Bush’s unswerving support for the death penalty? What about the invasion of Iraq, that the Vatican repeatedly warned violated Catholic just war teaching? None of these were mentioned because they would not fit with Weigel’s long career of defending and promoting the Bush agenda. If The Bulletin is going to feature partisan political columnists then I hope they will show some fairness and include some liberal Catholic voices.
