To the Editor:
Thank you for your wonderful article on the Catholic Men’s Basketball League (“Lourdes Dominates Catholic Men’s Basketball League,” The Georgia Bulletin, Nov. 13). The league is providing time for men from different parishes to enjoy some fun competition as well as fellowship with one another. Thanks to all the hard work of Jim Winkler and all the men who participate this league—and of course our wonderful fans! Thank you for the mention of me being the only priest who has the courage to play (still suffering a sore jaw because of a forearm to the chin from the game the other day ... you know who you are) and the only priest who has put points on the board this season ... why just yesterday I nailed a beautiful 3-pointer (some said it did not have any arc to it, but it still went in).
With all this good news I must let you know that I was saddened by the timing of your article running last week ... what unfortunate timing. For you see, by not waiting until the end of the season, you could not accurately represent the fullness of how this season played out. But since you ran your article so soon, you missed the fact that St. Matthew won a game! Finally! We were trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (and those guys from St. Gabriel were fighting hard for the win), but with time running we took control of the ball and time ran out and we won 44-43! It was a great effort by my team and the guys from St. Gabriel. In fact, all of our games and the entire league has been extremely fun—thanks for the coverage. Oh and to any of my brother priests out there who want to play, I say, bring it on!
