To the Editor:

I have read critical responses directed toward those who make abortion the focus of pro-life work. I have never heard criticism from those who fight abortion directed toward those who focus on capital punishment, euthanasia, excess poverty, etc. So, I wonder. What manner of conscience criticizes the doctor for neglecting the broken bone as she is tending to the severed artery? There are many ways to serve the human body. Those who serve the already born may avoid the scorn of the world and hope for the affirming smile and touch of gratitude directly from those whose needs they address, but those who serve the unborn bear the scorn of the world and must regularly defer to heaven the most precious affirming smile and touch of gratitude. Have mercy on your humble brothers and sisters and show nothing but support so that the innocent and gracious souls of heaven will smile upon you, too, and gladly share the joy of a warm embrace. You may be certain, when the critical bleeding has stopped, the gracious doctor will set the broken bones and suture the torn flesh as well.
