Jonesboro Event To Focus On Franciscan Spirituality

Published March 29, 2007

St. Philip Benizi Church will host a “Day of Franciscan Spirituality” on April 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presented by the friars at St. Philip Benizi and the Secular Franciscans of Immaculate Conception Fraternity, the day will offer a variety of presentations and workshops on the Franciscan order, its history and its spirituality.

In addition to presentations on Franciscan prayer, St. Francis and creation, St. Francis’ “perfect joy” and the history of the Franciscan order, a presentation will also be given on St. Elizabeth of Hungary.

This year is the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Elizabeth, a Secular (or Third Order) Franciscan who was the daughter of King Alexander II of Hungary. Workshops during the day will offer teachings on the San Damiano Cross, the Franciscan Crown Rosary, praying with a Franciscan saint and Secular Franciscans today.

A short film on the life of St. Francis of Assisi will be shown, and a craft room will allow participants to make their own memento to take home. There will also be a ‘Franciscan Hall of Fame’ that will teach attendees more about other Franciscan saints. A closing celebration of prayer and music will end the day. All workshops and presentations will take place in the new Education Building.

A $12 attendance fee will cover the cost of the provided lunch and additional materials for the day. Payment can be made at the door, but advance registration, by April 12, is requested.
