NEWNAN—The Pinecrest Academy girls remain perfect in region play as they defeated The Heritage School 48-38 on the road. Seniors Christi Cassandra and Annelise Nevarez led the scoring attack with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman guard Margaret Cassandra also had 11 points.
Pinecrest trailed by two at the end of the first quarter, but the team’s senior players held their own under Heritage’s pressing defense. Pinecrest head coach Kevin Furtado said, “We played with composure tonight. Annelise ran the point well and Christi played well inside. She is undersized at five-foot-nine but is athletic, quick and especially quick off her feet. She gives opponents fits inside!” The Pinecrest girls improve to 9-5 overall.
The Pinecrest boys also defeated their Heritage opponents 55-37. They jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead on their way to victory. Senior co-captain Brian Guhde led all Pinecrest scorers with 23 points. Senior guard Michael Metz had his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. His teammates Joe Neiner and Brendan Donahue also chipped in 9 and 7 points, respectively. Pinecrest head coach Andres Montana said, “The first half was our best half of the season. We are getting stronger every game. Our zone was particularly effective tonight.” Guhde added, “We need to keep working. It feels good to be 4-0 in the region. We need to keep giving our best for Christ.” The Pinecrest boys move to 7-5 overall.
The Pinecrest teams return home to play Calvary Christian School, Columbus, Friday, Jan. 18.
