What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor: Immigration Article Questioned

Published: December 13, 2007

To the Editor:

I have written a letter to the editor only one other time in my life, but after reading the lead article (Immigration Debate Calls For ‘Prophetic Courage’) in the Nov. 8 edition of The Georgia Bulletin I felt compelled to write you.

I am for immigrants. But for the Indians, we are all descended from immigrants. Immigrants and their ancestors are what make this country great.

I am against illegal immigrants. Illegal. They circumvent the process to avail themselves of the opportunities in this country, and in doing so, jump ahead of people working to enter this country legally.

The article was one-sided. Particularly offensive was the quote from Father Daniel Stack inferring that those opposed to illegal immigration are racist. Apparently the archdiocese holds the same views. That is a blatantly intellectually dishonest argument. Yet, you let it stand. I expected better from a Catholic paper.

I don’t know how many people were swayed by the piece, but I was not one of them.
