Letter to the Editor: Questioning Organization’s Stand On Abortion
Published: September 27, 2007
To the Editor:
This is in reference to the editorial “Moral Calculus Skewed In Vick Case” (The Georgia Bulletin, Sept. 13).
As a practicing Catholic, I find Mr. Finney’s article both offensive and misleading. He seems to feel that because PETA does not have a stated position on the question of abortion, they are, somehow, endorsing it. Such conclusions are ridiculous. There are many organizations, both within and without the church, which have no stated position on abortion, simply because that is not the focus of their efforts. PETA is concerned with the humane treatment of animals. That is the focus of their mission statement. To expect them to have a stated position on abortion would be the same as asking Morality in Media for their stated position on cruelty to animals. For that, matter what is the stated position of The Georgia Bulletin on the question of animal abuse, and dog fighting and where is it stated and when was it formulated?
I also find his statement that “we have a moral obligation to help others correctly form their consciences” to be divisive, judgmental and arrogant. What he really means is that we have to force everyone to conform to our way of thinking. I find that kind of reasoning disturbing and offensive.
