What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor

Published: August 16, 2007

To the Editor:

While the abuse committed by priests is a horrendous chapter in our church’s history, I would like to take time to focus on a priest here in Atlanta who, as my son said, “epitomizes the philosophy of a good shepherd.” Msgr. Thomas Kenny is the man of whom I speak.

It is no exaggeration to say that Father Kenny, as he prefers to be called, is everything that is good about a Catholic priest. He is a true shepherd to his flock at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Father Kenny has been with our family through joyful and sad times. His compassion and faith have sustained us while his wit and brilliant mind have entertained us.

Recently after the death of my dear mother, Father Kenny made himself available to provide comfort at the funeral home, celebrated her life at the funeral Mass, and said the final prayers at her gravesite.

If young priests in our diocese are looking for a role model, they need look no farther than Father Kenny. He is a gift from God not only to the Cathedral but the archdiocese as well. We are truly blessed he left the shores of Ireland for the city of Atlanta over 40 years ago.
