To the Editor:
I was absolutely delighted to read that the archbishop had convened an archdiocesan pastoral council (“First Archdiocesan Pastoral Council Commissioned,” The Georgia Bulletin, April 12). To say it was the first is not quite correct. Archbishop Paul Hallinan convened a synod in 1966 right after he returned from Vatican II, and they issued a decree as to how the archdiocese and the parishes were to be operated. The big items for the laity were an elected archdiocesan pastoral council for the archbishop to consult with and an appointed board of education to operate the school system.
It is just great that after about 35 years the laity will (again) have a voice in the operation of the archdiocese.
