To the Editor:
I was struck with irony by the article “Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act Upheld” (The Georgia Bulletin, April 26) which celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on a tragic procedure. I too am pleased by the ruling, but the decision would not have been possible without the appointment of Justices Roberts and Alito. The paradox arises because an organization supported by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), opposed the appointment of these two Catholic judges. A visit to the LCCR Web site reveals they continue to attack Alito and Roberts. If the church and the archdiocesan newspaper wish to celebrate this decision, perhaps the bishops should withdraw their support for the organization so rabidly opposing the judges who enabled it. Surely there is a better way to achieve the church’s goals in the civil rights arena without supporting a group that impedes the church in its other causes.
