To the Editor:
Your article entitled “Local Efforts Being Made to Link Christians and Jews” (The Georgia Bulletin, May 3) may have created some confusion about the difference between the Catholic Church and Christian Zionists, such as those who organized the event at Trinity Chapel. The Church has made important historical advances in its relations with the Jewish faith; it has also established relations with the state of Israel. Still, the Vatican has always made it clear that it does not support those policies of successive Israeli governments that oppress the Palestinian people. Christian Zionism is, however, an explicitly political movement that backs the Israeli government and its Palestinian policies. As Catholic Christians we should make a clear distinction between supporting the state of Israel and giving its government a blank check. Rather than listening to Christian Zionists, we would do better to listen to the voices of the peace and human rights movements in Israel who hold their government to the highest ethical standards.
