What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor

Published: March 15, 2007

To the Editor:

This past Sunday (Feb. 25) our priest, Father Joe (Shaute), spoke about people not having time for God these days. I have to wholeheartedly agree with him!

Since I have been going to Mass at St. Theresa’s in Douglasville, I have noticed a large amount of parishioners who show up late to Mass every week. Father Joe spoke of people needing to spend more time reading the Bible, praying, and such. I also think people need to spend more time in church, at least get to Mass on time and spend the whole hour in church. I would be so embarrassed to show up after the readings or Gospel, but it seems to happen at the Mass I go to every week. I guess it doesn’t really bother them, but the commotion caused by these persons when they enter the church bothers myself as well as the other parishioners.

If you are running late, wouldn’t it make sense to go to a later Mass? Is tardiness just rampant here or is it all over our diocese? I think the least we can do is give Our Lord a full hour each week for Mass.
