What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Peachtree City

To the Editor:

I thoroughly enjoyed your pro-life articles in the Jan. 25 edition of The Georgia Bulletin, but I also felt that you left something essential out of these articles. In the latest edition of your periodical, there wasn’t a single mention of House Bill 1, which the Georgia House of Representatives has brought forward in order to fight the decision of the Roe v. Wade case. This bill states, “The State of Georgia has the duty to protect all innocent life from the moment of conception until natural death. We know that life begins at conception. After three decades of legal human abortion, it is now abundantly clear that the practice has negatively impacted the people of this state in many ways, including economic, health, physical, psychological, emotional, and medical well-being.” It goes on to say “A fetus is a person for all purposes under the laws of this state from the moment of conception,” and then later, “No person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws. Because a fetus is a person, constitutional protection attaches at the moment of conception.” House Bill 1 aims at making abortion illegal in Georgia. Because of this, all Catholics should be strongly supporting it. This bill could save many lives and deserves to at least be mentioned in your newspaper.
