To the Editor:
I’m sure others join me in thanking David J. Shook of Marietta for expressing what so many of us believe to be the problem with some of our current church leaders regarding illegal immigration. The pressure should be on Mexico to provide for their own, but there is no incentive to do so as long as a large percent of their income is derived from illegal workers in the U.S.
I recall struggling with my conscience regarding this issue about 20 years ago, long before 9/11. Then I read an article by Father Theodore Hesburgh of Notre Dame in one of the Chicago papers, wherein he expressed the need to control and limit immigration in order to preserve the unique culture we have in this country and to allow for assimilation. I surely wish he were still around to enlighten some of his fellow priests.
