To the Editor:
Thank you for the recent article by Archbishop Gregory on the lies about Christ and his Church in “Da Vinci Code” (The Georgia Bulletin, May 25). The portrayal of Opus Dei in the movie as a secret society whose members are capable of murder puts all Catholics trying to lead holy lives at risk.
In the same issue, the article about Father Maciel (“Legionaries’ Founder Banned From Public Ministry”) brings to mind the scene in the Gospels when Jesus stood before the Sanhedrin, falsely accused. Father Maciel’s reverence for the Eucharist, love for the pope, the church and fidelity to the magisterium are incompatible with the accusations made against him. Priests have been falsely accused, either out of spite, for monetary gain or because of mental illness in the accuser. Even saints such as Padre Pio have been removed from public life for a time because of false accusations. Let us pray for the church and all its members that we grow in holiness each day.
