What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Smyrna

Published: May 4, 2006

To the Editor:

I partly agreed with Mr. Gustave A. Backelant from Jefferson about his comments published in the April 13 edition of The Georgia Bulletin that: “Our pastor and several other Catholic churches in and around Atlanta preach a united Christian community, yet they have separate Masses in Spanish, separate fundraisers, separate breakfasts and events.”

One thing I realize that several other non-Catholic churches in this state offer so many English classes for Hispanics and immigrants at different times and at almost every place in town, while Atlanta Catholic Charities open just a few classes from a very far and remote place. Why don’t we open as many English classes as possible at every Catholic parish at flexible times so that these Hispanics and other immigrants have a chance to learn the language and integrate into our American society? Have our Catholic leaders ever thought about this option before? If so, are they willing to have this implemented?

Many thanks.
